How to pronounce “processes”: An open letter to corporate types

Published by

on

Dear corporate people,

When it comes to the word “processes,” it’s always /ˈpɹɑsɛsɪz/, never /ˈpɹɒsɛˌsiːz/. For non-IPA readers, that’s PRAH-se-səz, not prah-suh-SEIZE.

The “seize” sound only applies to irregular plural nouns where singular forms ending in -is, -ex, or -ix turn into -es or -ices, as in thesis to theses, index to indices, and matrix to matrices.

Please drop this proceseize business immediately.

Signed,
